Excerpt from The Contendings of the Apostles, Vol. 2: Being the Histories of the Lives and Martyrdoms and Deaths of the Twelve Apostles and Evangelists: The Ethiopic Texts Now First Edited From Manuscripts in the British Museum, With an English Translation

The present volume contains English translations of the series of Ethiopic texts which were published in the first volume of this work in 1898, and relate the history of the Contendings of the Twelve Apostles and of certain of the Seventy-Two Disciples. The translations may be divided into three groups: - 1. Those which have been made from the British Museum Manuscript Oriental 678, wherein they precede the colophon on Fol. 137, and seem to have formed in the XVth century of our era, when the manuscript was copied, a complete Ethiopic work entitled 'Gadla Hawaryat'. 2. Those which have been made from the miscellaneous texts which follow the colophon. 3. Those which have been made from the British Museum Manuscript Oriental 683, a manuscript which probably dates from the period of the first half of the XVIIth century, and which contains the works which may be called 'The Acts of Saint Peter', and 'The Acts of Saint Paul'.
